Science Corporation announced that its chief strategy officer Darius Shahida was appointed president, effective immediately.

Shahida will continue leading the Alameda, California-based neural engineering and brain-computer interface company’s work with investors, global commercialization, and partnership efforts. He’ll keep reporting to co-founder and CEO Max Hodak, as well.

“In many ways, our company is entering a new commercial era,” said Hodak. “Darius can and will be a force multiplier around these efforts, as we begin to translate years of important scientific and technical work into products that can change health outcomes and powerfully impact the lives of our patients. Darius is already helping us build the commercial organization and operating infrastructure required for this next phase.”

Science Corp. recently revealed the European and U.K. commercial launch of PRIMA, a retinal implant for vision loss caused by geographic atrophy associated with macular degeneration. CE marked in July, PRIMA is now being prescribed and implanted in eligible patients and is the first approved brain-computer interface (BCI) for restoring form vision.

“I’m honored by the trust Max has placed in me,” said Shahida. “His vision has already established Science as a leader in the field, including bringing the first commercially available brain-computer interface for form vision restoration to patients. I’m excited by the work that remains ahead of us. I believe the team we are building and the work we are doing have the potential to improve the lives of millions of people around the world. I feel incredibly fortunate to play a part in making this vision a reality.”
